Evan is currently testing his limits with us by screaming "NO I WON'T" and "DO IT RIGHT NOW!!!!" and crying with more anger and pathos than I've ever seen from him. It all started because he didn't want his diaper changed, but then he tried to shush his father by hitting him in the mouth, and that didn't go as planned.

Poor guy. He did take a nap at daycare, but he's still so tired.

Quatrain by Sharon Shinn
Four medium-length stories set in four of Shinn's most popular worlds -- Samaria (the angels world), the 12th Kingdoms, the world of Castle Auburn, and the world of Heart of Gold.  They are all pleasant, readable stories.  I'm not sure whether someone unfamiliar with all four worlds would be able to appreciate the stories, though.

Heart of Gold by Sharon Shinn
This is a re-read for me.  For those of you who don't like social commentary in your stories, don't bother reading this;  it's as social-commentary-heavy as your average episode of the original Star Trek.  Two races -- gold-skinned and blue-skinned -- with radically different and equally imperfect social structures try to co-exist.  Now don't get me wrong, I like this book a lot.  I like Shinn's development of both cultures and I enjoy the social commentary aspect.  I think there's a solid story about people underneath the social commentary too.

Dear SCA

Dear East Kingdom,

I think its high time we got ourselves a functional list, with strident moderation, and abandoned the current list to the nonsense that lives there. People are unsubscribing left, right, and center and we're losing a valuable resource for communication.

Isn't there someone, somewhere, who would volunteer to build a new, functional list-serv and then recruit, say four or five moderators for it -- moderators who would, you know, actually moderate.

The list (or the idea of a list) is useful. The signal to noise ratio is not.

Can't someone save us?

Semi-random thoughts...

In wine, there is truth.
In beer, there is experience.
In the martini, there is an olive.

Of course, none of this makes sense, but, then, after a couple of martinis, you wouldn't make any sense either...

Not Much

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 10:32 AM
That is what I did last night: not much.   Had pasta for dinner, pumped a little iron, and watched the tube.  "Antiques Roadshow" was ok.  "The American Experience" episode was about the building of the Hoover Dam, sometimes called the Boulder Dam.  Actually, the documentary was about the politics of the dam--the naming, the funding, and the building of the damn thing.  I didn't watch all of it, but I did think, "Gee, what an opportunity for a graffittist..."

Septa, the folks who bring you from point A to point B (and who were not working last week), has annouced a rate hike set for next year.  They claim that this increase has nothing to do with the new contract.  I think they're shovelling the bovine goo with a front end loader in this...I'm still walking to work.

Tonight will probably be more iron pumped and watching NCIS, or PBS, depending on which comes in, if at all.

Early!

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 7:51 AM
Mr E was up -- and I mean UP! -- at around 4 am. He was content to snuggle with me until his father's alarm went off at 530 am, and we spent the time spelling words and talking about word sounds, but 4 am is a little early.

Still, his mind is clearly full of words and sounds. Once again reaching a developmental milestone means no sleep for me. But, if it means he'll be reading soon, I'll take it.

For those who care - the Society for Creative Anachronism is a HOBBY, RECREATION, AND/OR GAME.  Everyone will enjoy it to their level...and should not fault the method/means of enjoyment of others for having any effect on their own.  Anyone taking the SCA too seriously, or implying that the fun of others in the game is interfering with their own should seek immediate psychiatric help.

Don't we all participate in this organization for the fun of it?

Thank you.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 9:48 AM

First, the weather was great this weekend.  This ment I could work outside without too much discomfort.

Saturday was spent doing a little cleaning and helping a novice pad and strap his helmet.  I also helped him put together his first sword. A sucessful day.  Patrikia spent the day working at UPenn with Alumni and was wiped out and sore when she arrived home.

Sunday was spent working on various projects.  I could not watch "CBS Sunday Morning" due to bad reception.  Arg.  Mostly I worked on a coat of plates, and so the project is three-quarters done.  Pounding rivets is very theraputic, btw.  I then swept leaves (the back is paved with bricks) and bagged them, and eventually, cleaned out a couple of  cat boxes.  Our new cat, "Smash," has decided that our laps are acceptable.  Karma has been kept.

The week ahead.

--Today my brother starts his new job.  Prayers, positive vibrations would be appreciated.

--Wednesday the Veterans Day.  I have the day off.

--Thursday I have a Dr.'s appointment.  So much for fighting.

--Next weekend will be busy.

--I'm trying to arrange a ride to 100 Minutes War.   I might actually fight.  It all depends upon need.

--Thanksgiving will be quiet this year...I have to work the next day.

--Relatives are already making Christmas noises.

Red Head Again

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 10:59 PM
My Love colored my hair dark red yesterday even though he did not want to make it dark red but he did it at my request anyway. Now my hair, eyebrows and beard are Red. I love it, my man is not so sure. It will fade soon enough, red color always does.
I had to go in early to work today, I so did not want to be there but I was. The weather was stunning outside and I was inside. When I got home I planted bulbs: crocus, hyacinth, and daffodils. I love spring flowers and now I have something to look forward to this spring. I have been tempted to plant hellebore or Lenten Rose they bloom in the snow and they are supposed to be hardy here or so they say. It is late and I am going to bed.

House is at least as clean as when we started. Yard is cleaner.

Errands have been run. Some paperwork completed.

Scroll has 8 little border sections I have been dreading - one is now done.

Basket for silent auction is at least sort of put together. May need supplementing.

Walk has been taken and music listened to. Sunshine enjoyed.

Waffles made and kid hugged.

And Buffalo did not lose this week.

Guess it is an ok weekend. :-)
