1. What is one positive thing that has come out of the whole gluten free business, other than the lack of headaches?

I thought about this one for a while, and suddenly, a thought came to me. There are a growing number of people I wouldn't have met or wouldn't have gotten to know better had I not gone gluten free. Every time you tell someone that you're gluten free, they say, "Oh! Do you know so-and-so?" or "I have to introduce you to so-and-so, s/he is gluten free also!" It's kind of neat to have an instant conversation starter like that.

2. Why did you decide to go back to school?

Two reasons. One is that I didn't want to keep working at The Gap or the wilderness camp job for the rest of my life. I was finding that it was getting harder and harder to find good jobs with a lack of education. The second reason is that my mom kicked me in the ass and said, "If you apply for school now, I'll pay your application fee." That being said, I'm glad I took time off, because I know better now than I did then what I like, and I'm much more dedicated than I was then. I think I was kind of burned out on school, and needed the time to grow up.

3. If you were to become a doctor, what kind of medicine would you want to practice?

I can't really imagine myself practicing any kind of medicine. I'm fairly squeamish, and the idea of dealing with other people's bodies kind of freaks me out. I think the only thing I could really imagine doing is some sort of physical therapy. I thought about going into massage therapy (not really medicine, but kind of related) for a while, but the "dealing with other people's bodies" thing just kept me away from it. I think that people who do physical therapy do really great things, and being someone who could benefit from P.T. (if my insurance company would only pay for it), I have a special respect for those people.

4. Describe a perfect morning, afternoon or evening you've had traveling. (Okay, technically that wasn't a question.)

I'm not sure if you're looking for a description of being en route, or being somewhere away from home. I'm going to go with the first one. Mike and I usually have a pretty nice time of it when we're traveling, since we are fairly good at finding ways to entertain ourselves. One night jumps to mind, when we were driving to his parents' house in NJ. It's not a terrible trip, at 3.5 hours, but after hour 2, it starts to get somewhat monotonous. That particular night, I was driving, which I don't normally do on the way down there (Mike takes pity on the fact that during the week, I drive two hours a day, four days a week). We were both in good moods, and Mike was acting as DJ of the iPod. Somehow, he was just picking the perfect playlist of songs. Each song got us singing at the top of our lungs, smiling, laughing, and just enjoying being together. I was actually disappointed when we got to his parents' house, because the music had to stop.

5. What's your favorite sport to play?

If we're going with team sports, I think I'd pick volleyball. I never played on a team, but I like playing in peoples' back yards. I'm not very good, mind you, but with the right crowd, it can be fun. I generally don't like team sports, because there are too many moments where I feel like everyone is looking at me not to screw up. I don't like the pressure of being on the spot, which is probably why the only sports I was involved in were solo sports (gymnastics, running, wrestling).

The State of Me.

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 5:18 PM
The state of me is modified under the influence of a change in the industrial chemicals my brain mechanic has prescirbed. I certianly feel a little more energenic, not tremendously, just a little. This will hopefully help as the holidays commence. The real test will be seeing my family.

Things I will try to avoid talking about:

--Politics
--Economics

Things that will probably be discussed:

--Politics
--Economics

I will work to shut about this, and it maybe impossible. My family is a talkative lot, especially about politics and economics. "How ya doin'" is not a question that's always answered. So, then, how am I doin' you ask?

I'm trying to anticipate some of the problems coming up this Saturday at Bhakial Yule Revel. I had every intention to help with the fighting even before I volunteered a five man melee tourney in addition to everything else. But the real politics of this will probably start tomorrow night at fight practice.

I suppose it's better than discussing politics with my family. At least Bhakial Yule will pass.

Btw, if you can come and help, or if you just want to bash, please come.

I would be interested in getting three questions, and would happily give three questions in return to anyone who questions me.

That last part didn't come out quite right, but you know what I mean

MogileFS Maintenance

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 12:18 PM
Hey LJers,

I just wanted to let you all know that we are going to be performing some mogilefs maintenance over the next few days. We will be upgrading our current version to latest stable as well as changing some db config information to better handle the amount of files we are currently hosting. This shouldn't cause a big impact on site stability, but you may see some minor delays with userpic / scrapbook images appearing or other requests associated with our mogilefs. We would love to not have that happen, but unfortunately with some of the steps we need to take we have to cause a delay with images. I figured this was a better solution than taking down all of LiveJournal because well lets face it, we all need our daily LJ fix ;)

Thanks,

Marriage Equality in NY?

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 2:13 PM
Metafilter is liveblogging the debate about same-sex marriage that is happening right now in the New York State senate.

FYI: NY has no "People's Veto" process. If it passes, that's it. It can't be ondone by popular vote.

So, Sons of Anarchy.

Last night was, I believe, the second season finale. Just when you thought it was safe to be a Son in Charming....

Damn.

[And, for myself, I am glad to see them showing the complexity of Clay and Jax's relationship--it isn't all Claudius and Hamlet, which means when they finally have their showdown, it will really hurt....Yup--I like my tragedy complex and bloody.]

Unscheduled Laundry

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 10:31 AM
As Patrikia has reported one of our cats got sick in the middle of the night. Fortunately, we had extra clean sheets and blankets, but tonight will include laundry, in hot water, of the previous bedings.

Other the glorious excitment of cat sickness in the middle of the night, yesterday evening was uneventful. I watched President Obama's speech, which was characterized as "eloquent" and generally judged as the speech upon which Obama will be remembered, or some such load of bovine goo. The Administration is working on quite a few problems--the economy, health insurance, and the War. All of these problems have their complexities and carry political risks. All of these problems could ruin this presidency by themselves. I don't mind that risks are being taken, but I think the press has lost its perspective to judge just what the hell is going on.

Blind Side

  • Dec. 2nd, 2009 at 7:14 AM
My Mom really wanted to go see the movie "Blind Side", and since neither of us has seen a movie in forever, we went. It was a little slow in a few parts, but I enjoyed it. Although they edited out much of the Christian parts of the real story in order to appeal to more people, it was a story of someone who needed help, and was ready to be helped, and the couple who helped him. That middle one was really important. As noted in the hoarders post, they send a team to help people, but many of the people are not ready. Sure, there is a team ready to throw it all away, but the person is not usually ready to let go. They need months of therapy - not a cleaning crew. In this movie, there was a kid who was homeless, and they provided him a home, but it was more than that. He didn't just move in and become a football star. He moved in and was polite and helpful. He needed to study to be able to go to college, and he put in the extra work to do that. How many kids that age would have spent 20 hours a week with a tutor to reach that goal? How many would have just stolen the DVD player and vanished?

How do we find the people who are ready to be helped? And what do we do for the ones who aren't ready to accept it?
